Full Episode Transcript: My Failed Mastermind Launch

[Christina]: Hey, y’all welcome back to the Decided It’s Your Turn Podcast today. It is just me and I wanted to talk to you about something that happened to me recently.

By the time this airs, it will probably be a month past, but this happened in the moment and I really wanted to talk about it because I believe there are a few people who will totally resonate with this…hopefully, more than a few actually.

You can put yourself in the situation. It doesn’t actually have to be the exact same situation that I am going to refer to, but it is about perseverance and to keep going when it gets tough.

So, this past few months, I have been launching my latest Women with C.L.A.S.S. Mastermind.

For the past four year, I’ve been doing this mastermind (I’ve been doing it sometimes numerous times a year.) I’ve always found that I’ve had great responses to it. People want to be a part of it months and months in advance.

The last one we did last summer, sold out – maximum 20 people.

I keep my masterminds to a maximum of 20 people just because I want to create GREAT connections and I want to know ALL of my clients.

So for those who don’t know, a mastermind is a like-minded group of people coming together to accelerate growth. That is just my interpretation of it. Think of a sorority. You pay to be a part of a sorority to meet friends, like-minded people. So that’s what a mastermind is.

The last couple of years I’ve been running my Women with C.L.A.S.S Mastermind. It’s always been extremely successful.

This past summer, we sold out at 20 members. It was AMAZING. It was an awesome four months.

So this past October, when the last mastermind ended, I opened up registration for this next semester, which started January 13th.

So, I basically had it open for three months. I wasn’t really, really talking about it until about November.

So for November and December, my goal was to sell this sucker out, go on vacation and kind of have two weeks to not worry about it.

Initially, I had numerous members from my past mastermind sign up again. I had tons of interests, people who are super stoked for it in the summer, and couldn’t do it for one reason or another said that they were going to do it January 2021.

Awesome. That was the plan, right?

Let’s all be honest.

How often do things always go to plan?

So, one of the ways that I help people basically decide on themselves, decide on investing in themselves – and let me just put this up there: I believe with every ounce of my soul that masterminds are one of the ABSOLUTE fastest ways to accelerate your growth, your confidence, your accountability, your consistency, all of the above.

I believe in what I do, like the sky is blue. I hope you guys realize that my passion that comes across or what I get to do, I literally wake up because of this.

So, all that to be said, it’s really easy for me to sell anything that I do because I literally believe it – to my absolute core – that it works. Like I am confident as fuck that what I provide actually has a ton of value and when people invest in themselves and they go all in, I go all in. The results are massive.

So, I thought there would be, you know, a good amount of traction in the beginning. We’d sell out 20 people. I would take my two weeks off in December, which I normally do for my one-on-one clients, my retreats, everything.

Well, guess what? (Laughs.) Before we went on vacation, I did not sell out. I barely sold out half of the spots.

I think I had maybe 11 spots before we went to go on vacation.

You know, you guys, when you’re trying to put something out there, what doesn’t even have to be an online program launch – put yourself in this story: When you’re trying to do something and it’s not working out the way you want it to.

Do you have these stories that come into your head? You have these beliefs like, “Oh my God, is this not going to work this time?” Or, “Oh my God, am I doing something wrong? Or, “Is someone else better than me?” Or, “What’s wrong with my program? Why don’t people want to be a part of this anymore? Did everyone not get the value that they thought they were going to get? Are people saying things to other people? What is happening? What’s wrong with ME?”

You guys, those stories and thoughts come into people’s brains all the time.

I am not going to tell you that I haven’t had a few of those moments, but every time I got still I’m like, “Christina, do you believe in what you do? Do you believe that you love your humans and that you want them to succeed? And you believe that this is a path that could help them?”

My answer was always yes. So, for me to quit and lay down on trying to fill this mastermind would have been like, giving up on my people.

Because I know when you join a mastermind, you’re actually joining it not only for me, gosh, I’m like the least amount really. You’re joining it because you’re getting a tribe of high bread. You’re getting a tribe of people who are going to hold you accountable and to be consistent, motivated, competent, stepping into your purpose, and believe that you can do anything you can do. You look at someone else and you’re like, “Oh my God, I’m not that much different than her. She’s doing the thing!”

So I believe in this so wholeheartedly.

So my job is to make sure that I fill these things so there’s more amazing people for you to surround yourself with!

So before we left for vacation, I was feeling like, “What the heck is going on? Like, what’s wrong with me? This is silly.” But every time I got still I’m like, “No, no, no, no, you can’t quit on these women. You cannot quit on these 10 or 11 people that have already signed up to do this.”

Like more people the better and, you know, I was doing all the things. I have an amazing coach in my life. I’m a coach. I have an amazing coach. Don’t hire a coach that doesn’t have a coach. That’s just my personal belief.

But my coach was like, “Christina, is it the strategy? Or is it emotional, like, what do you feel? Is it fears and objections coming up?” And I’m like, “I’ll be honest, girl. Like, I feel like this is actually like a strategy thing. I feel like I’m doing all the things. This isn’t emotionally charged. Like I am showing up every day, making sure that I’m sending emails, doing posts, connecting in the direct messages, reaching out to people that I had talked to before, like perhaps I’m doing something wrong.”

And she said to me, “Christina, you have one of the strongest mindsets that I know” (and obviously I thank her for that because I believe she does as well) but she’s like, “I think you just need to kind of give it up to God” and in that moment, it was like one of those like Aha! moments to me. She said, “Are you doing everything that you can do?”

And the truth is there’s always something else we can do, right? But overall I was doing like 90% of the things that I could do. And she said, “Well, then Christina, God’s doing his part, you’re doing your part and you got to release it to let everyone else do their part.”

And in that moment, it just almost gave me such rest, right?

It didn’t mean that I stopped doing all the things. It didn’t mean that I started thinking out of the box, “How do I get more people to see this? How do we get more people on a phone call with me?” Because I do know, and I hope this makes you want to get on a phone call with me, but I do know when you get on a phone call with me, you can feel my energy. You can feel my passion for wanting you to literally be confident in your purpose.

This is the reason why I wake up, you guys. I have to do this all the time. I could probably work a fraction of what I actually work, but I am obsessed with what I get to do. I literally cry on some of my calls with people who I’m like, “Oh my God, you’re not fully stepping into your purpose. Oh my God. I knew where you were for me 10 years ago when I was at my lowest low, you are there now.”

And I am such an example that you can get to the other side and not want to be the person who helps them get to the other side, but sometimes I just have to do my part and God’s got to do his part. If that person is not to where they need to do their part, then I can’t force them to do that, right?

But I can continue to say step up! I can say, “Okay, well, 10 or 11 is good enough. That’s a lot of money. That’s a lot of people. That’s totally fine.”

No, fuck that. I’m going to the very last minute.

So I started thinking outside of the box, I started booking calls while I was on vacation. I didn’t take all but maybe two calls while I was taking my two week break at Christmas time. (Which I always do. You know, one of the things that I preach, if you guys are going to be here for any amount of time, you’ll know that self care to me is extremely important!)

So I was there, posting and sharing and reaching out to people and making sure that people were booking calls. So when I got back from our trip, I was able to jump right back in it because we only had like 10 days to get more people into this mastermind. So I had like nine spots to fill after coming home for Christmas.

And so I know, I 100% have to get on calls. I know that when I get to connect with people and I can talk them out of their own scaredness, because that’s it guys, you just don’t trust yourself. If you’re not willing to invest in yourself, you’re just not willing to trust that you will take the action steps in order to make the dreams or reality whatever it is that you want to come true.

Most people say, “Oh, I don’t have the time. I don’t have the money. What would my husband say?” or whatever. But the thing of the matter is if I told you today that you had to invest a hundred thousand dollars in a property, my husband’s a developer. So you invest a hundred thousand dollars in a property.

You put in $50,000 and you’ll be able to sell it for $200,000. You’d be like, “Ab-sa-fucking-lutely, where’s the money?” Like I would take out a loan to do all the things because you see it as a tangible investment that you believe to be true on the other side. Here’s what I know real estate is another great example.

You may buy it for a 100k and think you’re going to put in 50k and it might take you 90k, you know, to put it in there. And then your return on investment is only 10k.

At the end of the day, that’s still a return on investment. The thing is most people have such a hard time investing in themselves because A) it’s not tangible. You don’t feel like you see it, right?

Tons of people who work with me, tons and tons and tons, make tons of money in their businesses or make tons of money once they figure out their purpose or whatever it is. But every time someone goes, “Well, how can I invest that in myself?”

You guys, you are the best investment ever.

Your happiness, your purpose, your confidence, your wife, your friendships, those things are just as valuable as a tangible asset, but you just don’t look at it like that OR you’re not confident enough in yourself to know that you’re going to take the action steps and that’s half my job as a coach is to make sure you ARE holding yourself accountable, that you ARE doing the things.

So coming back to the mastermind that I was trying to fill, I knew while I was on vacation, I had to think out of the box, I had to get on calls. When I got home, I had to reach out to people that I hadn’t been reaching out to.

I keep a master list of all the people that I’ve ever talked to. I went back and I talked to those people again, to see if they were willing to step into their greatness.

This group – I had 20 spots. I think I had 9 to fill. Once I got from the holidays, I only had 10 days to do it.

I knew God was going to have to show up big time.

I knew people were going to have to trust in themselves.

I was going to do everything that I could because I knew this group needed to have the BEST people.

I did everything that I could. My team just supported me so amazingly.

But here’s the thing, guys, I got to the final day – literally at 3:00 PM. Our last client signed, I think at 12 o’clock on the day we started.

3:00 PM: We’ve got the whole package we put together for these people and in Google Drive and everything put together by three o’clock.

I took a quick walk for an hour, and then we started at five. And I honestly, I can tell you with every ounce of my being by the time that the three o’clock came and I got home from my walk and we started at five, I knew it was the perfect amount.

I knew that God did his job because I know for a fact I did mine. I know for a fact that God did his, and I know that the 16 people I ended up getting out of the “20” that were supposed to be there, it was the perfect amount. I don’t look at myself as a failure. I don’t look at myself as like I’m doing something wrong. I didn’t look at the programas if it is “off.” I did everything that I could to the last minute.

And then I gave it up to God. I said, “You know what? This is amazing. This is perfect.” And I have been serving these women and I will serve them as long as this program is over. I trust with it that it has nothing to do with me.

When you take off the emotional charge of, “Oh, maybe it’s me, maybe this doesn’t work. Maybe I’ll never succeed. Maybe I’ll never make money, maybe whatever.”

Whatever the story is that you’re telling yourself – that’s not true. And that’s keeping you from greatness.

If it is true and you do need to pivot and you do need to learn, or you do need to put something else into the program, do it.

But at the end of the day, you can’t give up because someone or something, isn’t working out the way that you’re expecting it to.

I expected that it would be full. I expected what it would sell out, like everything else in the past year has sold out. But it didn’t. So I had to pivot, I had to get out of my own way.

I had to quit telling myself the stories that perhaps someone else was better or perhaps I was doing something wrong. It had nothing to do with that.

I know this program works. I know that I am probably one of the best coaches out there, and that may sound cocky to some of you.

But I honestly know that. I can tell within myself.

I’ve worked with a lot of people and I’ve seen a lot of people in this space. I care so much about my clients, sometimes to an absolute fault, and I am getting better at that! It’s releasing God’s part and my part and my client’s part. I sometimes get those very, very confused, but at the end of the day, I had to go until the very last minute.

So when it was finally full and this group was full with what God called full. Not what I thought was going to be full.

I just knew I had to continue on until that moment. And I continued and I did everything that I could until it was God’s call. And then I released it and then I know it’s the exact thing, and I have no idea how God is going to fast track my business and my life in this next year.

I’m so excited for it. I’m expecting it. I’m waiting with expectations, but I’m not wrapped around the fact of how it’s going to happen.

I have no idea how it could happen. The COVID pandemic last year definitely fast forwarded me in so many ways, which is crazy to even think.

And I know so many people that it was a struggle for them. For me, it was like a fast track of growth.

I do believe it’s because I decided it. This whole podcast is about deciding it is your turn.

So if there is something that you want to do and you need to decide that it is your turn, then you have to do all the things that you can possibly do.

You can’t talk yourself out of it. You can’t blame yourself. You can’t think that you’re not good enough and you cannot quit.

The only way that this mastermind was not going to be the perfect amount of people is if I quit.

I just don’t have that in me. I could not have quit at 10 because it’s never about me.

I now know there were six more people that needed to be a part of this. Oh. And by the way, the whole roller coaster of it all is something extra special.

I had people sign up, drop out, join, not join. Someone needed much more help than me. At the end of the day, I just could not quit because it’s never about me.

It’s about the people in this group that I am there to serve.

So if that helps you at all, quit thinking about it as you.

“I’m not good enough.” That’s a lie. It’s not about you. Why are you doing it in the first place? Why are you organizing what you do? Why do you do the job that you do? Why do you show up every single day?

And if you don’t have a strong why, you’re probably going to quit a lot more. My why is so fucking strong that there’s no way I’m ever going to quit. There’s no way I was going to let what could have been this massive group of 16 people end at 10 because I got in my own way. That would have been so selfish for the 10 people that were there because there’s six more people that are now in this group that are going to make it amazing this year.

So I hope that you understand that, number one, it means nothing about you. If you don’t fill something the way everyone says that “It’ll get filled and it’s so fucking easy.”

Number one is not always that easy, but it’s sometimes is when you just release it to God, source, universe, whatever you believe, you obviously know – it’s God for me.

But you know, whenever you look out there and go, “Hey, God, I kind of give this to you because I can only do my part and I’m going full in on my part, but I need you to do your part.”

And once he did, we got 16 incredible, amazing women, and I’m so, so thankful for that. And I’m so excited to serve them over the next four months.

And I have no idea, the next one, I might have a 15-person waiting list….A 15-person waiting list and all 20 may resign or it’s going to be something completely different. I don’t know what that is. I’m expecting greatness. I’m expecting to do my part, but then I know that God’s going to do his part.

So, whether you’re in the online space or whether you’re listening to this and you’re doing something right now, that seems really hard and it seems like you’re screwing up and it seems like this is all about you.

I hope that you remember, it’s really not about you. It’s about showing up and serving in the best way and then watching what happens.

So I hope that encourages you today.
